Are you a University of Bath CDS alumnus?

As many of you will know, QuIP’s origins were in the Centre for Development Studies at the University of Bath, where the initial ESRC-funded research was undertaken before we spun out as a non-profit consultancy to continue our research and development. We will therefore be joining CDS later this year when it celebrates turning fifty! If any subscribers to this blog are CDS alumni, we would like to extend CDS’ invitation to join past and present staff, students and other CDS associates for a symposium on future prospects for international development.

Celebrating 50 years of CDS

Date: Thursday 11 September.

Registration will be in the Chancellors Building, Claverton Campus, Bath, from 13.30. The event will include two panel-led discussions, followed by a reception and buffet dinner.  Participation is free, but prior booking is essential. Please do so HERE as soon as possible.

Session 1 (14.15 to 16.00). Prospects for international development. We will reflect on the unfolding crisis of international development ‘practice’ – ongoing power shifts, aid cuts, erosion of trust, retreat from multilateralism, what these imply from different geo-political perspectives, and what new forms of global governance are emerging.

Session 2 (16.30 to 18.00). Prospects for development studies. We will reflect on how the scholarly study of global development is evolving – the struggle to decolonise thinking, the weakening link between development studies and practice, shifts in disciplinary emphasis, and interactions with global political economy, international studies, environmental studies, conflict studies and other fields of study.

The sessions will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the 2025 UK Development Studies Association Conference (hosted by CDS in June) on the theme “navigating crisis dangers and opportunities in development”.
