Those new to the QuIP are encouraged to participate in training before they embark upon a QuIP study. The level of training will depend on the extent to which they intend to be involved in QuIP studies (study design, data collection, analysis).
We offer three types of training; 1) for evaluators planning to design and manage a QuIP, 2) for researchers undertaking QuIP interviews, and 3) an advanced coding & analysis course for anyone analysing QuIP data. All courses are delivered online unless you request a face to face session at a location of your choice. Please click here to see a summary of our training prices and click each section below to find out more about the training we offer. See QuIP training course feedback here.

1) Lead Evaluators: if you plan to design and lead a study
We offer training for M&E professionals in QuIP project design and management. Currently under development, this course will soon be available as an online self-study program with a one-hour individual mentoring session with a member of the Bath SDR team at the end. The cost of this course is £500 + VAT. If you wish to book please contact jo@bathsdr.org
For small groups, we can provide a bespoke blended learning option, combining live sessions and self-study. Please contact jo@bathsdr.org for more information and costs.
This course will offer an in-depth introduction to the theory behind QuIP as well as the practical aspects of designing, costing and managing a study from sample selection to final data analysis using causal mapping techniques. The modules cover:
- Methodological overview; main features, contexts where QuIP fits best
- Planning a QuIP: time scales, roles and expectations
- Case selection (sampling)
- Questionnaire design
- Logistics and skills required for data collection
- Introduction to causal qualitative data coding & mapping
- Introduction to analysis of data in Causal Map
QuIP accreditation and follow-up
You will receive an attendance certificate for satisfactory completion of the course and an accreditation certificate if you complete the assignment after the course. The course should prepare you to be able to design and bid for QuIP studies in your own work, independently or alongside Bath SDR. You may also be interested in using the course to adapt the way you currently design qualitative evaluations, without using the QuIP approach in its entirety. The assignment and one round of feedback are included in the cost.
Please review our Training Terms & Conditions prior to booking.
Note: This course introduces analysis of QuIP data using the free subscription level of the Causal Map software. Use of this software after the course is entirely optional – other qualitative analysis software packages are available, and we will also discuss use of Excel for coding.
Causal Map is not owned or operated by Bath SDR, but developed by Bath SDR staff and advisors in order to provide a more efficient process for coding and analysing causal data. The software is free to access for QuIP training participants during the course and you will be given a copy of an Excel sheet which can be used as a free alternative for coding data. Should you wish to use Causal Map for a QuIP project following the course there are different Causal Map subscription packages available and substantial free guidelines online. Further support to learn how to use Causal Map for QuIP coding can be provided on request.
2) Researchers: if you will conduct interviews
We train research teams in-country to collect data for QuIP on a study-by-study basis. We offer an option to train teams remotely for you. This is charged at £750+VAT per group and would follow a schedule similar to this.
3) Analyst: if you will code QuIP data
The Lead Evaluator course includes an introduction to the coding & analysis of QuIP data in Causal Map. Those who go on to use it may feel that they need additional support before they embark on an independent study. Given the time sensitive requirement for training (most people will want to do this just before they start a project), we don’t offer group training courses. Instead, we can provide access to online materials to help guide you through the main features and give you advice on best practice. Please contact us to enquire about the fees for access to these materials. In addition to these self-study materials, we can offer 1:1 support to guide you through the first steps of coding a study, charged in half day increments.
